Six Falls Chasing a Rock That Curls the Wrong Way
CurlingThe first thing curling took from me was my footing, and it took it in front of a woman named Fran who had the patience of someone who has watched a great many people fall down on purpose. “Push out of the hack,” she said. “Let the slider do the work.” I pushed out of the hack. The slider did the work. The work, apparently, was to deposit me sideways onto very cold, very hard water while a 20-kilogram granite rock coasted serenely away from me toward the far end of the sheet, unaccompanied, like a dog that has decided it no longer knows you.
I did this six times before lunch. Six.
Here is what nobody tells you about the delivery, or rather, what several people told me and I did not believe until the ice corrected me. You are balancing on a fist-sized patch of Teflon glued to the sole of one shoe, gliding, with your trailing foot dragging behind for a bit of a rudder, your throwing arm out front holding a rock you are meant to release like you’re setting down a sleeping baby. It is not a strength move. Grip strength is actively your enemy here — the harder I white-knuckled the handle, the more I torqued the rock as I let go, and a stone is only supposed to make two or three lazy rotations across the whole twenty-second trip down the sheet. Mine were spinning like a hard-tossed frisbee. Fran called it “over-handling.” I called it several other things, quietly, into the ice.
The balance is the part that undid me, and I say this as someone who spent last week subtracting a dart score down toward a clean double-out and concluded that the throwing was the easy half. The throwing was the easy half in darts. In curling the throwing — the release, the weight, the line — is a whole discipline that only begins after you’ve solved the prior problem of not being on your back.
Some genuinely interesting mechanics did survive my incompetence long enough to lodge in my head. The ice isn’t smooth. Before play, a technician walks the sheet spraying warm water droplets from a backpack tank, and those freeze into a fine bumpy carpet called pebble. The stone rides only on that pebble, and only on a thin ring on its underside called the running band — a couple of millimetres of contact, not the whole flat bottom. Polished-smooth ice would grab a stone and suck it to a dead stop; the bumps are what let 20 kilograms travel forty metres. So the surface I kept faceplanting on was engineered specifically to be slippery in one direction and grippy in another, which felt personal.
Weight — how hard you throw — was the one thing that carried straight over from the dartboard. Beginners overthrow. Every single one of us on that ice threw takeout weight when we wanted draw weight, sending rocks crashing through the house and out the back like we were trying to hurt them. Calibrating force to a target you can no longer touch once it leaves your hand is exactly the darts problem, just heavier and further away and on a surface trying to kill you.
But I came for a specific reason, and on that the day gave me nothing. When someone at the darts night mentioned the open house, what actually got me through the door was a question: a rock spinning clockwise curls to the right, which is backwards. A spinning glass dragged across a table drifts the other way. I asked three curlers why. One said it was the front of the stone melting a slick that the back rides across. One said no, it’s the back edge scratching a groove the front follows. Fran said, cheerfully, that the physicists have been arguing about it for decades and nobody has actually settled it, and then she told me to get back in the hack.
I looked it up on the drive home. She was right. There’s a friction-melting camp and a scratch-guiding camp and a 2023 paper picking a fight with both, and the honest state of the science is a shrug. I fell down six times chasing a question that turns out not to have an answer yet.
I have bruises on both hips and I still don’t know why the rock goes right.
